History of Columbia House - BMG DVD Club

Columbia House is one of the oldest monthly clubs still existing in the United States. It began in 1955 and offered record albums, competing with RCA at the time. At that time, record clubs were in vogue in the United States. If you purchased a lot of records, you could take great advantage of Columbia House as they would offer to give you 10 records for 49 cents.

Over the years, the price of records went up, although they still ended up offering a good deal for those who joined where they could get several albums for the price of one. Eight track tapes and later, cassette tapes were also offered as an alternate.

When CDs became the standard for music, Columbia House offered them but had some new competition. BMG competed heavily with them for space in the CD market. Columbia was also offering video of the month clubs. The video of the month club offered the same type of deal as the music clubs where someone got to choose from a selection of VHS tapes and received 6 for the price of one. At this time, BMG only offered music. Columbia House offered music and DVDs. Most of the music clubs began to start DVD clubs for those who liked movies.

BMG recently purchased Columbia House and discontinued their music club that is no longer accepting new memberships. Those who are part of the club can continue to purchase music from them to fulfill obligations. The BMG DVD club is called the Columbia House DVD club and still is active. The BMG DVD club offers you a chance to get the latest releases on DVD for a discounted price.

Both Columbia House and the BMG DVD club both operate in the same fashion. You sign up for membership and get to choose several DVDs for less than what you would pay for one in the store. You then get a notice every month of a new DVD that is coming out. This will be sent to you automatically unless you decline. You have an obligation to buy several more DVDs from the Columbia House or BMG DVD club over a specified period of time. Currently, you can choose 5 movies for a price of 49 cents each when you join the Columbia House DVD club or BMG DVD club. Music is no longer available from Columbia House or BMG on a monthly basis. This is most likely due to the ease in which people can download music on the computer. The company has now chosen a new path to take and is a heavy hitter when it comes to movie clubs.

If you enjoy buying the latest releases in movies, then you can save some money when you use the BMG DVD Club. The history of Columbia House has come to fruition and although the music that built Columbia House to where it is today is no longer part of the services offered, you can get the latest releases on DVD for less by joining the BMG DVD club.
