About Beverly Lewis
Beverly Lewis is the author of over 70 books and is most well known for her depiction of life in the Amish Community in her book “The Shunning.” Most of her writing is focused on life in the Amish community in rural Pennsylvania, although she herself was not raised Amish. She was born into the Mennonite Church and continues to be part of the religion known as the Assemblies of God.
Ms. Lewis is a Christian writer who lives in Colorado with her husband, David Lewis. She has three children and three grandchildren. She has been the recipient of numerous awards for Christian fiction, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2003 from Evangel University.
Although she grew up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, which is considered to be the heart of the Amish community in the United States, Ms. Lewis was raised a Mennonite. The distinction between the two religions focuses on the Mennonites using modern conveniences such as telephones, cars and electricity. However, the religious beliefs between the Amish community and the Mennonite Community have similarities. Both believe in modesty and are pacifists.
The Heritage of Lancaster Counter Series was the first series that Ms. Lewis wrote that gained her recognition in the writing world. The first book of this series was “The Shunning” which told of a young Amish girl who questions her faith and decides to go off into the “English” world in order to find a different meaning to her religion. Although this book was promoted largely at Christian bookstores, it gained mainstream popularity and spawned several more books in the series. Since then, Ms. Lewis has gone on to become a New York Times bestselling novelist and has also been listed in the best sellers list for CBA as well as USA Today.
She is the winner of numerous awards for her fiction and has also written a series of Youth Fiction as well. All of her books carry forth the message of Christianity but are told in a subtle form. She has also written a collection of picture books as well.
A movie entitled “The Redemption of Sarah Cain” was based upon her book, Saving Sarah Cain and has been shown on the Lifetime Network. Ms. Lewis continues to live with her family in Colorado where she continues to write. Her books have sold millions of copies throughout the world and can be found in local bookstores, Christian bookstores as well as online outlets such as Amazon.
